| IBRU
receives frequent requests for information and advice from governments,
scholars, commercial companies and media organisations around the world.
We offer authoritative, impartial advice on a wide range of boundary
issues and we welcome enquiries of all kinds.
In 1998 IBRU established
a formal agreement with the United
Kingdom Hydrographic Office to share
expertise and resources with the UKHO's Law
of the Sea Division.
Competing claims
We facilitate the peaceful resolution of competing territorial claims, including problems associated with the ownership and management of transboundary resources.
Negotiations & tribunals
We assist clients prior to and during negotiations over territorial claims, giving concise, accurate and practical advice. We work closely with clients' legal advisers and other technical experts in the prosecution and defence of claims before international tribunals.
Archive searches
We undertake archive searches into the history and evolution of boundaries and territorial claims. IBRU's experienced researchers can assist clients in identifying and interpreting relevant treaties and other key historical documents.
Technical support
We provide technical support on boundary delimitation, including the preparation and analysis of maps and charts illustrating actual and theoretical boundaries.
Regional expertise
In the Middle East we have gathered and analysed a large volume of data relating to boundaries throughout the region, including the Arabian peninsula, the Arabian/Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. In East and Southeast Asia we advise governments, oil companies and law firms on maritime boundary delimitation issues. As part of a wider report for the governments of Japan, Russia and the United States on security in East Asia, we have examined cases relevant to the dispute over the Kuril Islands. In Africa we have produced reports on many boundaries, including a report for the Libya-Chad boundary case before the International Court of Justice and maps for the United Nations delimiting a nuclear free zone for Africa.
Our clients have included:
- government ministries
- international organisations
- multinational corporations
- international law firms
- oil and gas exploration companies
- shipping lines
Support facilities
IBRU is backed by the modern facilities of one of Britain's largest departments of Geography, one of only five geography departments in the country to receive the government's highest possible grading for its research excellence - as well as the top teaching grade. The department offers expert support in cartography, geographical information systems and remote sensing. It has its own photographic laboratory, printing service and map library, supplementing IBRU's own extensive map and chart collection. |
